Selections include writings from familiar or known voices such as Thomas Merton, Robert Fitzgerald, and Annie Dillard, as well as excellent but less-well-known poets such as Amy Fleury, Kathryn Young, and Frank Stewart. It is taken somewhat for granted that contemporary serious writing is ir-or even anti-religious; this splendid collection of poems should go a long way toward diminishing the possibilities of faith in poetry. However, it's mired in a past/present layer cake of a story, where the 'past' layer is all overwrought writing and name-dropping contemporary figured, and the present is all 'gritty' urban fantasy with good people doing bad things, bad people doing ambiguous things, and some eye-roll-inducing pontification on the nature of good, evil, death, and whatever else.
Someone could probably take the basic plot elements of this book and write a novel i'd very much enjoy. . From vaccines to vitamins, the author discusses available options without being an advocate. A pity about them. "The Dog Who Thought He Was Santa" has two narrators. Many, many years ago a friend suggested "Carl" books. He did not believe in pointing fingers or blaming corporations for the wrongs they inflicted on animals; he worked to find realistic solutions that benefited both sides.
