Knowing these systems rounds out your knowledge and provides perspective on where much of analog circuitry got its start. Ultimately the story would still make sense even without reading the first two books it ceretainly adds a true serial nature to the stories to have the complete history at hand.
The book also took some surprising turns and kept you guessing how the eventual ending would finally happened.
